The 3rd term English language test.
One of the reasons that people think manned space exploration should be abandoned is
because of its budget. Each shuttle launch costs around $1.3 billion compare with the two Mars Rovers which cost around $800 million together (Rupert, C 2006). In other words, a manned space trip would easily pay for several robotic missions. As a result, a portion of the population suggested that the government should cut off some of the space program funding and to meet the underprivileged instead of making human space craft. Their point is, to improve the living standard of poor is much more important than spending billions to put a few men somewhere outside the earth.
It seems to be reasonable but consider the statistic below: The NASA annual budget is $15.47 billion. In 2004, the total pet-related sales in the United States are projected to be $31 billion –twice the NASA budget. The Americans spend $586.5 billion a year on gambling – at least 30times the NASA budget. Furthermore, $89 billion is spent on alcohol and tobacco products, the real problem is, $250 billion are spent annually on the medical treatment of tobacco- and alcohol-related diseases, 16 times more than spending on space exploration (Virgiliu 2004). So, does cutting off the space exploration budget really helps solving the problems? Why not stop gambling or consuming stuff which is bad for you anyway? Which is more worthy, to explore the unknown or to meet personal satisfaction?
